Honoring Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month

Hi there,

April marks the beginning of Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month, a time to celebrate our children, families, and communities, while also reflecting on the journey of raising awareness and promoting understanding of autism. For me, this month is deeply personal, it’s about my child, our family, and the mission behind J Steppin' 4 Autism.

Raising a child with autism has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. From the first moments I noticed my child’s unique way of seeing the world, I’ve learned that autism isn’t something to “fix", it’s something to embrace, support, and celebrate. Every step of the way has shown me the importance of patience, creativity, and advocacy, not just for my child, but for families everywhere.

Some mantras I carry with me every day are:

• “I am his voice, he is my heart.” This reminds me that my advocacy is rooted in love and understanding.

• “Autism is a part of my son, but it does not define him.” It helps me focus on his strengths, joys, and individuality.

• “Progress, not perfection.” Every small step matters.

• “Celebrate every win, no matter how small.” Joy is in the little moments.

One of the things I want to emphasize this month is the importance of acceptance and inclusion. Awareness is everywhere these days, and that’s a good thing but awareness alone isn’t enough. Acceptance is what truly changes lives. Our kids are no different than other kiddos, God just blessed them with a little something extra that makes them even more unique. Their challenges may be different, but so are their gifts, talents, and potential.

Our kiddos can do and be anything. Yes, they may need to work harder at certain things, but they can succeed. They can thrive in school, sports, the arts, and eventually in careers. They can build meaningful friendships and make a positive impact in the world. Acceptance from family, teachers, peers, and communities opens the door for them to fully grow, shine, and reach their dreams.

Starting J Steppin' 4 Autism came from a desire to turn our journey into action. I wanted to create a community where families feel supported, where children feel valued, and where the broader world can learn about acceptance, not just awareness. Over the past 5 years, we’ve organized toy drives and autism awareness & acceptance walks, and I’ve had the privilege of speaking with other parents, sharing my experiences and offering guidance to families navigating a new autism diagnosis.

This month, I encourage everyone, parents, friends, educators, and allies, to take a moment to reflect and take action. Here are a few ways you can participate in Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month:

1. Learn and share – Take the time to read about autism from reputable sources, and share stories that promote understanding and inclusion.

2. Join local events – Walks, fundraisers, and community programs are great ways to show support. Even attending virtually counts!

3. Support families – Sometimes the simplest gestures—donating toys, offering a helping hand, or just listening—make a huge difference.

4. Celebrate differences – Encourage conversations about neurodiversity in schools, workplaces, and your own circles. Acceptance starts with awareness.

As a parent and advocate, I hope that by sharing my experiences, the triumphs, and the challenges, families feel less alone, and supporters feel empowered to make a difference. Every small action contributes to a larger movement of inclusion, understanding, and love.
