💙 The Last Day of Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month 💙

April 30th marks the final day of Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, and as a mom of a child on the spectrum, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and share my thoughts.

While this month may be coming to an end, for families like mine, autism awareness and acceptance isn’t limited to 30 days, it’s something we live 365 days a year.

There are challenges…..real ones. But one thing I always say is this: autism is a part of my child, but it does not define my child. And every single day, he shows me just how true that is.

Watching his growth, seeing his personality shine brighter and brighter… it’s a feeling that’s hard to fully explain.

When I was pregnant, I dreamed about the life we would have. I imagined the sports he might play, the conversations we would share, the girls he’d bring around (and yes, how tough mommy would be!), and even prom. I had a picture in my mind of what our future would look like.

After his diagnosis, I grieved that life I had imagined.

But only for a moment.

Because not long after, I began to embrace the life we do have - and continue to build together. And the truth is, I wouldn’t trade my child or our journey for anything in the world.

Yes, there are tough days. But there are also moments that take my breath away.

When he smiles.

When we laugh together.

When he creates, and his artwork is chosen for art shows.

When he uses his device to express his needs.

When I see him bounce a basketball or kick a soccer ball around.

In those moments, I realize something powerful:

We are living the life I dreamed of.

It may not look exactly the way I once imagined—but it’s just as full, just as meaningful, and just as beautiful.

Autism is part of our story. But it is not the whole story.

And our story? It’s still being written, every single day. 💙

At J Steppin’ 4 Autism, this is why we do what we do. To raise awareness, to promote acceptance, and to support families walking this journey every single day of the year, not just in April. If our story resonates with you, we invite you to connect with us, share your story, and continue spreading awareness and acceptance together.
